The science of fasting
Fasting sits in tradition and in physiology alike. Both say the same thing — the digestive system needs an interval.

What the interval does
While food keeps arriving, the body’s energy stays committed to digesting it. A fast is the stretch in which that energy turns towards repair.
That is why the fasting day is kept for rest and silence. If the day is spent rushing about, the fast only half does its work.
A caution
Fasting is not the same proposition for everybody. Pregnant women, anyone on insulin, and anyone significantly weakened should not fast without medical supervision.
